Mercedes-Benz, designed for the wilderness and enjoyed in the city, the GLA features a sporty and progressive design that makes it stand out among the SUVs. With this added to our ever-expanding luxury SUV portfolio, our customers now have more options to choose from,” said Dr Claus Weidner, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
“The GLA is the key entry point to the brand in the fast-growing compact SUV family. The model combines the better of two very successful segments: compact car and SUV. This enables us to offer a unique lifestyle proposition that is similar to the bigger GLB that we have recently introduced.” says Michael Jopp, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
Self-assured and dynamic: the exterior design
The GLA features powerful overall proportions with short overhangs front and rear. The front section flows over the A-pillar into the visually compact greenhouse. Suggested power domes in the bonnet, along with its wheels up to 19-inch in size and mounted flush with the outer edge of the body, reinforce the self-assured appearance. With a length of 4.41 metres, it is additionally the shortest vehicle from the current Mercedes-Benz portfolio and thus perfectly suited to life in the city.
The clear contours, with reduced lines and accentuated planes, convey serene sportiness and modernity. Typical of the GLA are the powerful shoulders of the bodywork and the coupé-like lines of the side windows. This contoured side profile gives the car it’s dynamically elegant flair and offers an interesting play of light and shadows.
As in the case of the other Mercedes-Benz SUV models, the radiator grille features distinctive openings along with a single louvre and a central star, with LED High Performance headlamps, finished to a high level of quality, detail and precision.
All-round protective cladding adds structure to the overall proportions and emphasizes the vehicle’s character, as does the simulated underride guard at the front and rear.
Two equipment lines are available: The GLA 200 is equipped in Progressive Line with 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels while the GLA 250 is equipped with AMG Line bodystyling. The AMG Line enhances the attractive, sporty presence of the vehicle with lowered and dynamically tuned suspension to intensify driving experience.
Contemporary and high-quality: the interior
The instrument panel consists of a basic volume, which features optical "cut-outs" in the driver and front passenger area. The cut-out on the driver’s side is dominated by the free-standing display unit, which is with two 10.25-inch displays. The latest generation of the Mercedes me connect is also a feature that comes as standard in the GLA.
The round ventilation outlets, five of them in all, feature a high-quality turbine look with meticulously designed air guidance vanes. The door centre panel flows seamlessly over into the armrest. The grab and assist handle has a tubular profile and runs horizontally like a railing.
Also featured in both models is the intuitively operated MBUX infotainment system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). MBUX can be individually configured with the aid of a range of options.
Significantly enhanced: the interior dimensions and the functionality
Although shorter than its predecessor on the outside, the new GLA offers a more spacious interior. This particularly benefits the legroom in the rear and luggage compartment.
The seating position for both the driver and the front passenger is higher and more upright than in the predecessor model, and thus more typical of an SUV.
Utility value was, in general, one of the focuses of development. There is plenty of room for one or two people in the rear since these backrest variants come with a 40:60 split. The rear seat back rest can be can be split 40:20:40, with each section folding down individually.
The height-adjustable load floor offers considerable variability. When the rear seat backrests are folded down and the load floor is in the upper position, an almost flat loading area extending to the front seats can be created.
Keeping an eye on the surrounding traffic: the driving assistance systems
The GLA features a host of driving assistance systems, offering the driver cooperative support and so providing one of the highest standards of active safety in the compact car segment such as the Active Brake Assist.
Available in the GLA 250, Blind Spot Assist is able to warn of vehicles, including bicycles, in the danger area. For the first time, when the vehicle is at a standstill it can signal to the driver with a visual warning in the exterior mirror before they climb out that a vehicle is driving past in the critical area.
The new GLA places its trust in the four-cylinder engines which are completely modernised for the new edition of the compact SUV series. It is available in two engine variants, GLA 200 Progressive Line and GLB 250 AMG Line.
GLA 200 Progressive Line
The GLA 200 Progressive Line is powered by the 1.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine combined with the 7G-DCT automatic transmission. It develops 120 kw (163 hp) and a maximum torque of 250 Nm, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.7 seconds.
GLA 250 AMG Line
Powering the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC AMG Line is the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with the 8G-DCT automatic transmission. It rates at 165 kW (224 hp) and produces a maximum torque of 350 Nm, accelerating the car from 0-100 km/h in only 6.9 seconds.
